Martyred Intellectuals Day observed countrywide

The Martyred Intellectuals Day-2019 was observed across the country on Saturday, paying glowing tributes to the intellectuals who were brutally killed by the Pakistan occupation forces and their local collaborators just before the end of Liberation War in 1971.

On December 14 in 1971, some of the country’s eminent personalities were dragged out of their homes, blindfolded and taken to unknown places and killed brutally.

People from all walks of life in different districts observed the Martyred Intellectuals Day paying rich tributes to martyred intellectuals.

Monnuzan Sufian joins AL discussion in Khulna

The observance began through placing wreaths at the monuments of the martyrs, hoisting of the black flags and national flag at half-mast atop all public and private buildings in Khulna, reports our Khulna Correspondent. 

Khulna district and city units of Awami League and its associate bodies, Jatiya Party, Jasad, CPB, Khulna University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, Khulna City Corporation, Khulna District Administration, Khulna Divisional Commissioner, Khulna Press Club, Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ), Khulna Swadhinota Sangbadik Forum, among others, paid homage to the great sons of the soil.

Khulna city and district units of Awami League organised a discussion at the party office in the city marking the day where State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnuzan Sufian, MP, newly elected Khulna City unit President and KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque, General Secretary MDA Babul Rana, District unit AL President and Zila Parishad chairman Sheikh Harun-ur-Rashid, general secretary Adv. Sujit Kumar Adhikary, among others, spoke.

Rich tribute paid to Martyred Intellectuals in Rajshahi

People of Rajshahi observed the day paying rich tribute to the martyred. Apart from national programmes, different political parties, professional bodies, educational institutions, and socio-cultural platforms observed the day through various programmes, reports our Rajshahi Correspondent.

Awami League and its front organizations placed wreaths at Rajshahi University Memorial Plaque, Bhuban Mohan Park Shaheed Minar and Rajshahi College Shaheed Minar.

Photo exhibition, public gathering, discussion meeting and lighting of candle on the mass graves were other highlights of the day’s programme.

Meanwhile, Rajshahi University observed the day through day-long programmes which included placing wreaths on Shaheed Minar, discussion meeting, milad mahfil and morning procession .

RU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Abdus Sobhan, Pro-VCsProf Ananda Kumar Shaha and Prof Chowdhury Jakaria,Registrar, Prof Abdul Bari, Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman and other teachers, officers and students placed wreathsat the RU Central Shaheed Minar in the small hours.

Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) and the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Rajshahi observed the day through almost similar programmes.

IU VC leads shock rally in Kushtia 

The authorities of Islamic University (IU) observed Martyred Intellectuals Day with due respect and homage on the campus in Kushtia, reports our IU Correspondent.

Marking the day, the university vice chancellor Prof M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari hoisted the national flag half mast while pro-vice chancellor Prof M Shahinoor Rahman hoisted the black flag atop of the university administrative building around 9:30am.

A shocked rally was brought out led by the vice chancellor while pro-vice chancellor, treasurer M Selim Toha, student advisor Prof Paresh Chandra Barman, deans of different faculties and,  among others attended the rally. 

IU authorities, IUTA, Banga Bandhu Parisad, Zia Parisad, officials, different departments, residential halls and different organizations placed floral wreath for the intellectuals at the memorial monument on the campus.

A prayer and one minute silence was also offered for the martyr intellectuals here.

Later, a discussion programme on the day was held at the central auditorium and its convener Prof Dr Jahangir Hossain of Islamic History and culture department was in the chair.

Kishoreganj dist admin arranges discussion 

Kishoreganj district administration arranged a discussion at collectorate conference room marking the day, reports our Kishoreganj Correspondent.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Abdullah-al-Mashud presided over the meeting while Deputy Commissioner Md Sarowar Murshed Chowdhury  attended as chief guest. Police Super Md. Mashrukur Rahman Khaled BPM (Bar)  attended as special guest. It was addressed among others by Deputy Director of Local Government Mohammad Abdullah, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education & ICT) Md. Habibur Rahman, Civil Surgeon (In-charge) Dr. Md. Mustafizur Rahman, Government Pleader Bijoy Shankar Roy, Gonotantree Party District President Advocate Bhupendra Bhowmik Dolon, Freedom Fighter Unit Former Commander Md. Asad Ullah, District Mohila Awami League General Secretary Bilkis Begum, District Awami League Religious Affairs Secretary A.K.M Shamsul Islam Khan Masum, Sadar Awami League President Advocate Md. Ataur Rahman, Journalist Safiul Hoque Mollah Dulu, Zila Parished Member Fouzia Jalil Nansy spoke on the occasion.

Sunamganj DC leads procession in district town  

Sunamganj district administration observed the Martyred Intellectual Day through different programs, reports our Sunamganj Correspondent.

On the occasion, a procession was brought out in the morning led by Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sunamganj Mohammad Abdul Ahad.

The procession  ended at Central Shaheed Minar in the district town after parading different roads of the town. Later, the DC along with others placed wreath there.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of Sunamganj Mizanur Rahman, Additional SP Hayatun Nabi, Mahabubur Rahman and Abu Tareq were present there among others.

Government officials, freedom fighters and members of different political, social and cultural groups took part in the procession.

Liberation War-based drawing competition held in Keshabur

Marking the day, Keshabpur Upazila Administration and Shishu Academy jointly organised a liberation war-based drawing competition, essay and recitation competition. A discussion was also held at Keshabpur Model Government Primary School at the upazila in Jashore, reports our Keshabpur (Jashore) Correspondent

The event was presided over by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nusrat Jahan and conducted by Upazila Children Affair Officer Bimal Kumar Kundu. Upazila Yuth Development Officer Pulok Kumar Shikdar and the President of Upazila Press Club S R Saeed gave speeches among others.

Meanwhile, former State Minister for Public Administration Ismat Ara Sadek, MP, attended a preparatory meeting of Keshabpur upazila unit of Awami League. The meeting was held on Friday to discuss the preparation about observation of the Martyred Intellectuals Day and the Victory Day-2019.

Sherpur dist admin holds discussion  

The day observed in Sherpur with due honor. Marking the day, a rally and a discussion session was held by Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office where the winners of an essay competition were given prizes too.

On the premises of district collectorate Deputy Commissioner of Sherpur Anar Koli Mahboob inaugurated the rally in the morning. Later a discussion session took place at Talshimala Training Center presided by Deputy Director (Deputy Secretary) of Local Government Division ATM Ziaul Haque. Other Government Officials, freedom fighters, political leaders, reporters and students were present at that event.

AL holds discussion in Rajbari

The Martyred Intellectual Day was observed at the initiative of the district unit of Awami League in Rajbari, reports our Rajbari Correspondent.

In this regard, a discussion was held and special prayers were offered. They also paid homage to martyrs by placing wreathes at the local Martyred Intellectuals Memorial. Acting General Secretary of Rajbari District Awami League unit Kaji Ibadat Ali was present at the event. At that time members of Awami League, Chhatra league, Jubo Mahila League among others were present.

Chuadanga AL holds elaborate programmes 

The Martyred Intellectual Day was observed in Chuadanga with due honor. On this occasion National and Party flags were kept at half-mast on the premises of District Awami League office early in the morning, reports our Chuadanga Correspondent.

Later wreathes were placed at Martyred Freedom Fighter Memorial by the President of District Awami League Unit Solaiman Haque Joardar Selun, MP. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nazrul Islam Sarkar and Superintendent of Police (SP) Zahidul Islam of Chuadanga also paid homage to the martyrs. After that freedom fighters, members of martyrs family and members of different political, social and cultural organizations paid their homage to the martyrs.
