Due to heavy downpour in the last forty eight hours Narayanganj city and the outskirts went under knee-deep even up to waist-deep water creating untold sufferings and miseries for the people.

As the canals have been occupied and chocked up constructing buildings by the influential persons, water cannot flow into the nearest rivers and water remains stagnant in the town.

The City Corporation and different municipalities constructed some drains, but those are narrow and insufficient for water to recede and fall into the river.

Besides, hundreds of roads were constructed in unplanned ways without keeping any culverts or drains under the roads and that is why the water cannot recede and the roads remain under water.

The sufferers in different areas claim that now it is badly needed to recover immediately hundreds of canals that went under land grabbers.

However, a number of rivers cross the district but people have been suffering from flash flood due to lack of drains between canals and rivers.

A senior citizen of Narayanganj Sadar upazila named Sawkat Ali told the Bangladesh Post that two major problems are playing a role behind the water logging situation after rain- one is canals grab and other is dredger terrorist regularly forcibly filling sand  in the low lying land pond, and canals.

District concerned authorities did not confirm how many canals were immediately grabbed even unable to mention the total number of canals in the district.

A city development planner on condition of anonymity told this correspondent that the roads are too much higher than the locality and have no water passing policy like culvert or bridge.
