During the holy month of Ramadan, the market will be strictly monitored to keep the prices of daily commodities at a tolerable level, said Agriculture Minister and Awami League presidium member Dr Md Abdur Razzaque.

He said, “As a result of timely and prompt action of the government, prices of essential commodities including oil and onion have already started falling. Meanwhile, fasting is starting after a few days. During the month of Ramadan, the market will be strictly monitored to keep the prices of daily commodities within the purchasing power of the common man. No one will be allowed to create instability with the price of goods. On the contrary, those who are thinking of creating instability in the prices of goods and looting profits, will be extremely disappointed.”

He was speaking as the chief guest at the triennial conference of South Keraniganj Thana Awami League at Ikuria Government Primary School ground in Keraniganj on Wednesday afternoon.

Dr Md Abdur Razzaque said that there was a real food shortage in the country when the BNP was in power. Before the Awami League came to power in 1996 under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, there was a food shortage of 4 million tons in the country. The Awami League made the country self-sufficient in food for the first time after five years in power and there was a surplus of 2.8 million tons of food. But within a year of the BNP coming to power in 2001, there was a food shortage of 06 lakh tonnes in the country in 2002.

Commenting that the BNP will never come to power again with the support of the people, the Agriculture Minister further said that the BNP does not trust the people of Bangladesh. Whoever the election commission is formed with, they will not abide by it and will not participate in the election. The BNP will participate in the elections only if it guarantees to win the elections.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid MP, Bangladesh Awami League Organizing Secretary Mirza Azam MP, Dhaka District Awami League President Benazir Ahmed MP, General Secretary Mahbubur Rahman and others spoke at the conference. South Keraniganj Thana Awami League convener Shahin Ahmed presided over the function and joint convener Moi Mamun conducted the function.
