Students of the Institute of Marine Technology in Munshiganj staged a shutdown on Monday, joining a nationwide protest across eight marine institutes. Their three-point demand includes immediate issuance of the Certificate of Discharge (CDC), direct recruitment as sub-assistant engineers in government ministries, and curriculum reform.
The protest took place on campus in Tongibari’s Barlia area, where students held demonstrations and boycotted classes. They said delays in obtaining CDCs are obstructing employment opportunities both at home and abroad. They also criticised the outdated curriculum and the lack of fair recruitment opportunities in public sector jobs.
The protest disrupted scheduled Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) sessions for students preparing to work overseas. Acting Principal Engineer Md. Jahangir Alam stated that the students’ demands have been forwarded to the concerned authorities and expressed hope for a quick resolution.
Students warned of stronger action if their demands remain unmet.
