In a major effort to empower marginal farmers and unemployed women, the Bandarban Hill District Council has distributed agricultural inputs, livestock, sewing machines and financial aid in Lama upazila. The initiative aims to improve livelihoods and health outcomes for vulnerable communities in the region.
At separate events held on Friday at Lama Adarsha Balika High School field and the Upazila Parishad auditorium, Council Chairman Thanzama Lushai officially launched the distribution.
A total of 160 farmers received 355 fruit, timber, and cabbage saplings each, while 31 beneficiaries were given pigs, 28 received goats and 7 received cows. Furthermore, 17 unemployed women were provided sewing machines to support self-employment. In a parallel health-focused move, 40 pregnant and lactating mothers were given financial support to ensure maternal and child healthcare.
The programme was attended by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Moin Uddin, council members, engineers, horticulture officials and local leaders.
Council member Saiful Islam Rimon said that similar distributions had already taken place in Alikadam and would expand to other upazilas soon. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance income generation, food security and healthcare access in remote communities, aligning with the council’s broader development goals.
