The regular activities of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital in Gazipur are being hampered due to various problems, including lack of necessary doctors, manpower and infrastructure.
The educational activities of medical college are underway in a building which was built for the hospital activities.
The hospital authorities said that the hospital has been suffering for manpower crisis. It was upgraded in the interest of serving patients without maintaining the physical infrastructure, even without increasing manpower.
People of Gazipur demanded taking initiative for overall development at Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital. “The government should attention to resolve the crisis at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital. People of the district and from neighbouring districts rely on the hospital. They are facing suffering for problems at the hospital,” said a resident of Gazipur city.
Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College was established in 2013. The college was formed as ‘Gazipur Medical College’. It was renamed to its current title after Tajuddin Ahmad, the first prime minister of Bangladesh, on August 22 in 2015. The 250-bed hospital has recently been upgraded to a 500-bed treatment facility.
A national English daily some weeks ago reports that critical patients at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital do not receive any treatment due to the lack of an intensive care unit.
According to that media report, many critical patients come here for treatment from the five upazilas of the district and even from neighbouring districts.
But the hospital authorities have to refer them to Dhaka for the lack of ICU facilities.
Although the place is ready for 10-bed ICU, facilities cannot be started due to lack of necessary manpower and equipment. However, only 400 beds are available at the 500-bed hospital. As a result, patients have to stay on the floor or corridor.
Meanwhile, infrastructure development is underway for the 15-storey hospital to resolve this problem.
