Man to die for killing wife

A Magura court has sentenced a man to death for setting his wife on fire for demanding dowry. Pranoy Kumar Das, judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, pronounced the verdict on Thursday. 

The convict Ashit Kumar Biswas is the son of Nityagopal Biswas of Khamarpara village in Sreepur upazila,Magura. He has been on the run for a long time. 

Prosecutor Abdur Razzak said that Prarthana Rani, 26, daughter of Prafulla Gain of Agailjhara upazila in Barisal, came to Sreepur of Magura in 2006 with a job at Swanirvar Bangladesh. Later, she got married to Ashit Biswas following love affair. They rented a house for living. A daughter and a son were born in their house. 

Ashit Biswas, a goldsmith by profession, and his family members repeatedly pressured his wife to bring dowry money from his father's house. At different times, Prarthana brought some money from her father's house. Yet torture continued to demand more money. At one stage, on the night of February 1, 2006, Ashit Biswas and his mother Niva Rani Biswas beat Prarthan to death and set him on fire.
