A Satkhira court has sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in 2014. Judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal M G Azam handed down the verdict on Sunday.

The convicted person is Rabiul Islam, 30.

The convict was also fined Tk 10,000 while the court acquitted four others as the charges against them were not proven beyond a reasonable doubt, said Special Public Prosecutor Jahirul Haider Babu.

According to the case statement, Rabiul married Rabeya Khatun of Jessore's Keshobpur in 2014. Rabiul along with his family members often assaulted his wife for dowry.

On June 6, 2014 Rabeya's father was informed about her daughter's death over a phone call. He went to her house in the morning and took her to Satkhira Sadar Hospital, where the duty doctors declared her dead.

Her body bore several marks of injury.

On June 7, 2014 Rabeya's father filed a case with Satkhira Thana accusing five persons including Rabiul.
