A man has surrendered to police after killing his wife following a family dispute in Mir Kadim area of Munshiganj.

The incident took place around 3am on Monday night in the Eastpara area of Mirkadim. Later, around 5am, the accused, Suman Shahjahan, voluntarily appeared at Munshiganj Sadar Police Station and confessed to the crime.

The deceased, Mitu Akter (28), was the daughter of Montu Mia from Noyadighi’s Pathor village under the same municipality. The accused, Suman Shahjahan (45), is a resident of Eastpara and the son of Shoriatullah Mia.

According to police and local sources, Suman and Mitu got married around eight months ago. It was the second marriage for both of them. Mitu had three children from her previous marriage. Since their wedding, the couple had frequent arguments and conflicts. Recently, Mitu left her husband’s house after a quarrel and moved to her father’s home. However, Suman’s friends brought her back just the day before the incident.

Later that night, Suman reportedly consumed alcohol with his friends and, with their alleged assistance, attacked Mitu with a sharp kitchen cleaver.

He struck her multiple times on her neck and body, ensuring her death. After committing the murder, Suman went straight to the police station and turned himself in.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station, Saiful Alam, said, “Suman Shahjahan came to the station and confessed that he had killed his wife. We immediately recovered the body and sent it to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.”

Preparations are underway to file a murder case, and police are working to identify and take legal action against others who may have been involved in the incident.

The brutal killing has sparked shock and outrage among locals, who are demanding swift justice and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
