A man was shot dead by his nephew in Maheshkhali of Cox's Bazar district.
The incident took place at 10 pm on Sunday in Mujib Killa Mohammad Shah Ghonar area in Kalarmachara Union of Moheshkhali Upazila, said Moheshkhali Police Station OC Md Manjurul Haque.
The deceased, Shahadat Hossain alias Doel ,49, was son of t Fazal Haque of the area.
The deceased and the accused in the incident are uncles and nephews.
Quoting locals, Manjurul Haque said that there was a long-standing dispute between Shahadat Hossain alias Doel and Saddam Hossain. On Sunday night, a verbal altercation broke out between the two due to a previous enmity. At one point, Doel was shot by the opponent. Later, locals rescued him and took him to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex. He died before brought to the hospital, said on-duty doctor.
The OC said that the police are working to unravel the mystery of the murder.
Initially, the police believe that the murder occurred due to a long-standing dispute between the family of Shahadat Hossain and the family of Saddam Hossain over land ownership.
The body of the deceased has been recovered and sent to the Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, said OC Md. Manjurul Haque.
