An indigenous man was killed in Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon on Wednesday during a clash between locals and people of indigenous community over land dispute.
The deceased was identified as kandan Saren, 55.
It was learnt that, 13 acres of land, recorded in the CS record in the name of Binodhan Murmu and Masu Hasda, was recorded under the names of Anil Kumar Kundu and Sunil Kumar Kundu, two individuals from Pabna. During the partition of the country, they migrated to India, and their land was subsequently included in the government's acquired list.
Later, Buddhu Hasda, a member of the indigenous community, filed a case in court, claiming ownership of the land, and won the case. However, the government appealed the case to the High Court. Meanwhile, local landless people have been using the land for over 40 years.
On Wednesday afternoon, members of indigenous community from Shihipur and Damol villages attempted to construct homes on the disputed land. The landless locals tried to prevent them, a violent altercation broke out and Kandan Saren was killed during the clash. Officer-in-Charge of Haripur police station confirmed the matter.
