A Meherpur court has sentenced Swapan Ali to life imprisonment with hard labor and fined him Tk 2 lakh in a rape case. In default of payment, he will serve an additional six months in prison. The verdict was delivered by Judge Touhidul Islam of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
Swapan Ali, son of Enamul Haque of Mohammadpur Kelapara village in Gangni upazila, was sent to jail following the verdict.
According to the case, Swapan developed a romantic relationship with a girl from Daulatpur, Kushtia. On September 21, 2016, he lured her to Gangni with the promise of marriage, took her to various villages, and later raped her at an under-construction building in Akubpur village. He also snatched her mobile phone and fled.
The victim's father filed a case the next day under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. After investigation, only Swapan Ali was charged. Following testimony from eight witnesses, the tribunal found him guilty under Section 9(1) of the Act.
