Man convicted in murder case held after 18 years

Mohiuddin, 46, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, fled to Dubai after the verdict in the murder case of Nazirhat College Principal Gopal Krishna Mahuri was announced.  After fleeing the country for almost 18 years, he was actually caught by the RAB.

RAB-7 arrested him from Sugandha, a residential area of the city on Saturday night.

The arrested is Mohiuddin, son of Elahi Box of Mandakini village under Hathazari police station.

According to RAB, he entered the house of Principal Gopal Krishna Muhuri (60) on Jamal Khan Road in Chattogram and shot him in the head with a weapon on November 16, 2001.  His wife Uma Muhuri, the then audit officer of the railways, filed a murder case with the Kotwali police station in Chattogram that day.  Nasir alias Gittu Nasir, Azam, Alamgir and Montu were sentenced to death by the Chattogram Judge's Court after the trial of the case.  Besides, Mohiuddin alias Mohinuddin, Habib Khan, Saiful alias Chhota Saiful and Shahjahan were sentenced to life imprisonment.  Mohiuddin, arrested, is Nasir's younger brother who was sentenced to death in the case.  Four of the 12 defendants in the case died during the trial.  Of the remaining 8 convicts, 6 are in jail.

  RAB-7 Senior Assistant Director (Media) Md. Nurul Abshar said, Mohiuddin fled to Dubai after the verdict in the murder case was announced in 2003.  He came to the country on October 29 after fleeing for 18 years.  He was a fugitive in Dubai for 18 years.  He was arrested at night in the Sugandha residential area while preparing to return to Dubai.
