The recent SAFF executive meeting and congress were marred by a simmering dispute over the Maldives Football Association's (MFA) unpaid dues for hosting the 2021 SAFF Football Championship. The issue of outstanding payments dominated discussions, creating friction between the MFA and the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF).
A significant sum remains outstanding from the Maldives' hosting of the 2021 tournament. This includes prize money for the champion (India), participation fees for teams, and SAFF's ownership fees. Despite repeated requests and attempts to collect the dues, the MFA has yet to fulfil its financial obligations. The situation has escalated to the point where SAFF has involved the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in the hopes of resolving the matter. MFA president Bassam participated online in the meeting. He promised to settle the financial affairs "after upcoming elections in the next two to three months." However, a sense of uncertainty hangs over the situation. New committee members elected after the polls might not prioritise clearing the old debt.
The Maldives' financial issues extend beyond simply failing to settle their debts. Complications obtaining visas for Pakistan prevented their physical presence at the congress, highlighting logistical challenges that could impact future participation.
Despite the financial woes, SAFF has seen some progress under the current president, Kazi Salauddin. The organisation has expanded tournaments for both men and women, securing sponsorship from FIFA and AFC. While Salauddin acknowledges the need for continual improvement, he emphasises the increased activity and sponsorship secured during his tenure.
The SAFF congress failed to reach a clear decision regarding the Maldives' participation in future tournaments and meetings due to the outstanding debts. The upcoming elections for the Maldives Football Association and potential committee changes add another layer of complexity to the situation. The Maldives Football Association's commitment to settling its dues and remaining an active participant in SAFF events will be key factors in determining the future of South Asian football cooperation.
