The 12th parliament will go into its maiden session today (Tuesday). President Mohammed Shahabuddin convened the parliament session exercising his power bestowed upon him as per clause (1) of article 72 of the constitution. This session, also the first one of 2024, will start at 3:00pm.

On January 7, the 12th parliamentary election was held in 299 out of 300 constituencies. Bangladesh Awami League (AL) won a massive victory by securing 222 seats, Jatiya Party won 11 seats and independent candidates 62 seats, and partners of the Awami League-led 14-party combine Workers Party and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) got one seat each. The 11th national parliament sat for its first session on Jan 30, 2019.

AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been reelected as the Leader of the House unanimously for the 12th parliament while Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader and Co-chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud have been officially recognised as the Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Leader of the Opposition respectively in the 12th parliament. The Jatiya Party was the main opposition party in the last two parliaments.

The independent parliamentarians will remain as independent ones. But they (independent lawmakers) will make constructive criticism of the government.

People of the country now want the newly-elected members of parliament (MPs) to attach topmost priority to working for the welfare of the country and work for balanced development in their respective areas.

People from different professions including political leaders, workers, and supporters are eagerly waiting to see how the MPs of their respective constituencies perform and what they do for their betterment. They are also excited about today’s maiden session of the 12th parliament.

All believe that the new lawmakers will work for the people in their respective constituencies. Besides, the people expect that the MPs will also raise their voice against misdeeds, corruption, militancy, and conspiracies.

Most political parties have representation in the 12th parliament. However, this parliament does not have any representation from the BNP as the party boycotted the January 7 election. Earlier, the party also boycotted the 2014 election.

The BNP is now in frustration as the party leaders now can realise that boycotting the January 7 polls was suicidal. The party has plunged into despair as their anti-government movement had failed.

Therefore, the party (BNP) has become isolated from the people due to their terrorist activities in the country. Having failed in foiling the national polls, BNP and some elements are now hatching a fresh conspiracy to create anarchy across the country ahead of the maiden session of the 12th parliament.

People made the elections participatory by enthusiastically casting vote in festive and peaceful atmosphere. But, BNP will hold a black-flag procession programme across the country on the first day the 12th parliament, demanding a fresh election under a non-party government.

On the other hand, the ruling AL will hold peace rallies in all cities, districts and upazilas of the country carrying national flags today.

People have no trust in BNP’s acting chairperson Tarique Rahman, who is staying in London.

The BNP has now turned into an enemy of the people. Leaders of the party (BNP) are trying to disturb the new government through terrorism and conspiracy. Therefore, their ill efforts must be dealt with iron hand.

It is clear to all that BNP does not want development of the country and its people. The party wants to push back Bangladesh. All the lawmakers have to remain alert so that none can foil the country’s democratic progress. Their (MPs) highest priority should be the welfare of the people and thwart any anti-state plot.
