Farmers in Panchagarh district are happy getting fair price of maize, which is required less cost and efforts, reports BSS.
Farmers of char areas along the river of Karatoa in sadar upazila and other parts of the district have harvested a bumper production of maize due to favouable weather and availability of agri-inputs.
According to at Department of Agriculculatural Extension (DAE), a total of 14,201 hectares of land have been brought under maize cultivation with the production target one lakh 20 thousand metric tonnes of maize this year.
A farmer can produce 35 to 40 mounds of maize on one bigha (33 decimal ) of land spending Tk 7,000 to Tk 8,000 and can sell maize of the land at Taka 30 ,000 to 35 ,000, said sources at DAE.
The DAE sources said per mound maize is being sold at Tk 800 to Tk 900 at local markets.
Abbasuddin, a farmer of Debiduba village, said he had pocketed over Tk 55,000 by selling maize produced in his two bighas of land.
Deputy director of DAE Md Mizanur Rahman said farmers of the district are also showing keen interest in maize cultivation as it requires less fertilizer and irrigation.
