Mahedi relishes powerplay challenge in World Cup

Bangladesh's spin bowler, Sheikh Mahedi Hasan, is a regular in the national T20 side and is poised to face similar challenges in the upcoming T20 World Cup. However, Mahedi admits that bowling in the powerplay is more about overcoming difficulties than pure enjoyment.

The spinner has opened the bowling on 27 occasions in T20 Internationals, achieving early success. Notably, 20 of his 38 career T20 wickets have come during the powerplay.

Bowling in the powerplay presents a significant challenge. With only two fielders outside the circle, bowlers must simultaneously restrict the opposition's run rate. Mahedi, however, has found success in this phase.

"There are more challenges than enjoyment," Mahedi conceded. "T20 is a game of runs, and the primary aim here is to restrict the flow. This challenge outweighs the enjoyment factor."

Mahedi aspires to experience greater enjoyment when bowling in the powerplay. "The powerplay is a demanding phase," he said. "There's little room for enjoyment at present. However, if I can find enjoyment in that situation, it would benefit the team immensely."

Mahedi made his debut in 2018 and was selected for the 2021 T20 World Cup squad. However, he was omitted from the 2022 edition but has been reintegrated into the team for the 2024 World Cup.
