The arrival of migratory or 'guest' birds begins in the country as soon as winter arrives. During this time, due to the extra snowfall in the Arctic, Europe, Siberia, some parts of Asia and the surrounding areas of the Himalayas, the migratory birds migrate to Bangladesh in the hope of food and safe shelter.  At this time, various haors and baors, canals and beels of Bangladesh become filled with these birds.

It is to be mentioned that, they do not go everywhere in the country. In those places, there is an abundance of food for the birds and they rush to the area of the huge reservoir. Due to this, the arrival of migratory birds has become prominent in the 'Mahamaya Lake' of Mirsarai, the second largest lake in Bangladesh. Although the number of birds is less in the beginning of winter, now the number of birds has increased.

The arrival of guest birds has added a new dimension to the variety of Mahamaya Lake. To enjoy the amazing beauty of nature with those birds, travel thirsty people are coming from different parts of the country. The whole town is buzzing with the chirping of these birds of different species. However, due to the poachers, hunters and the pollution of the environment, the number of the guest birds in this town has gradually decreased.

The vast waterbodies and reservoir in the Mahuri project area of Mirsarai has become a bird sanctuary without any official announcement. Now the arrival of guest birds is decreasing in this region. Due to the increase of bird hunters and the use of pesticides in the artificial fish project, the migration of birds from different parts of the world has started to decrease.

On closer inspection, it is seen that about 11 sq km lake of Mayamaya is now occupied by migratory birds. They started coming there from the beginning of winter. At present, the whole area is buzzing with the chirping of birds. Tourists who come to Mahamaya Lake area are also enjoying the birds flying, chirping and chirping. Many are busy capturing images of birds roaming freely, fluttering their wings, or floating in groups. The migratory birds were seen in the Kaftali area of the lake. Numerous species of small and large birds can be seen around the lake.

I came to Mahamaya last winter morning to see birds. No guest birds were seen in such flocks. It's really nice to see their team flying in the sky and chatting.”

Once upon a time, when the winter came, the canals, beels and reservoirs of about 20 km area from the coastal Muhuri project of the upazila to Shaherkhali area used to attract various birds of different colors and shapes. Now the arrival of nature migrants has started to decrease. Once upon a time, innumerable migratory birds including Balihans, Pankauri, Dahuk, Kana Bak, Sarali, Maasranga, Gangchil came here.
