Magura-Free Day today

Published : 06 Dec 2020 09:21 PM

Magura-Free Day will be observed today (December 7).

On this day in 1971, Magura was liberated from Pakistani occupation forces. On that day, the freedom fighters took administrative control of the whole district town. Victory flags emblazoned with maps of independent countries continue to fly.

In order to observe the day with due dignity, various organizations including the district administration have taken various programs throughout the day.

After Bangabandhu's historic speech on March 7, 1971, people from all walks of life in Magura, like in other parts of the country, started preparing for the war of liberation.

Initially, the freedom fighters organized at Nomani Maidan in Magura town and its adjoining camps and Wapda Bhaban. From here the entire Magura resistance war began to be controlled. Later, when the so-called Pak army reached Magura, the freedom fighters left the city and spread to different parts of Magura.

The Pak army set up bases at PTI Bhaban, Wapda Bhaban, Government High School, Government College and Ansar Camp in Magura town and carried out massacres, arson and torture. The freedom fighters fought valiantly against the invading forces at various places including Sreepur and Binodpur in Magura. Sreepur and Shailkupa police stations were captured. They inflicted casualties on the Pak army and razakars in multiple frontal battles.

Ashaduzzaman MP, one of the organizers of the Ranaghat Youth Camp in India, who was the dissident organizer of the Liberation War during the war, provided guidance, supplied arms and food to the freedom fighters. On 7 December 1971, the Pak army could not stay in Magura due to the air strikes of the Allied forces on the air and the freedom fighters on the ground and started fleeing towards Dhaka via Faridpur. On the morning of 7 December, the Mukti Bahini, in the guise of victory, entered the enemy-free town of Magura and captured various camps and ammunition of the Pak army.

Later, when the Allied forces reached Magura, they launched a joint operation with them and forced the fleeing Pak army to cross the Kamarkhali Gorai and Madhumati rivers around Magura. Later the Pak army marched towards Faridpur on its way to Dhaka. The Mukti Bahini was established in Magura on the morning of December 6. The flag of the independent country is flying in the whole town. In the joy of being freed from the aggressors, the whole city is called Dhal. The whole Magura area became abuzz with the slogan 'Joy Bangla'.

Magura district administration has taken various programs on the occasion of Magura Free Day. Tributes will be paid to the people of all walks of life at the memorial at Nomani Maidan in the city at 11:00 am on the occasion of Magura free Day. Apart from this, colorful Snake dance,`Lathikhel' would be held  in the afternoon including Bijoy rally, discussion meeting and candle lighting in different parts of the city.
