Hafizul Islam, an engineer of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha (RAJUK), becomes a millionaire within 20-year of his service through his ‘magical performance’.

He bought precious plots and a luxury flat at the residential area of RAJUK and used a top-brand vehicle.

Hafizul, who has joined the RAJUK in 2005, is serving as an executive engineer (Implemntation-6) and in-charge of Uttara Apartment Project (Implementation-4). Many of his colleagues think that Hafizul acquired these assets through illegal means.

The price of the apartment where he lives at Sector 7 on Road No 6 is about two crore taka.

A caretaker of the apartment said that there would be no result by writing news items against his ‘Sir’.

“My sir (Hafizul) lives at the fifth floor and maintains a healthy relation with noted journalists. Many journalists have come here for information but nobody could write reports against him,” said the caretaker. Apart from this flat, Hafizul owns a three-katha plot on Road 2 of Uttara Sector-16 and the value of the plot will be about five crore taka, sources said.

Officials of RAJUK regional branch also confirmed it.

The plot is named after her wife ‘Moon Baganbari (Moon Farmhouse).’ The area has been covered by various fruit trees.

Allegations are also rife that Hafizul collects monthly ‘tax’ from the illegal makeshift markets, erected around the Uttara Apartment Project. Locals say that the project director Hafizul Islam used to visit the Moon Baganbari every often. He planted saplings on 10-feet land of the RAJUK by abusing power.

They say that the official suddenly removed the nameplate of the plot and stopped nursing the saplings.

Apart from these, Hafizul has also a partial ownership of a farmhouse, built on 27-decimal of land at Rayganj under Sirajganj district.

Sources said that the piece of land, adjacent to Apex Hospital, has been bought under the name of his two brothers.

When asked about his plot at Uttara Sector-16, Hafizul told the Bangladesh Post that he bought the plot at Uttara and bought the new car after selling a piece of land.

Over the removal of the nameplate from his plot, he said, “Journalists are spreading misleading information regarding his wealth.”

He also responded to the allegation of sapling trees on the road saying, “It is 60-feet proposed road. And he has planted saplings on a portion of vacant plot.”

Over the land at Rayganj, he said, “We are two brothers. My younger brother works in the Bangladesh Army. The land has been registered in our names. The land has been bought as our ancestral home stands on a river-erosion area.”

When the attention of the RAJUK chief engineer Abdul Latif Helali (Project and Design) was drawn on the issue, he told the Bangladesh Post that the Anti-Corruption Commission has been there to look into the assets of such officials.

“If there is any specific allegation of taking bribe, the RAJUK will take measures against the official,” he added.
