The weeklong Madhu Mela-2020 marking the 196th birth anniversary of Poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt began at Sagardari under Keshabpur upazila in Jashore on Wednesday.

However, the official inauguration ceremony of the fair was cancelled due to the death of local MP and former state minister for public administration Ismat Ara Sadique who died at a hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday. So the fair started without official inauguration this year.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Jashore Mohammad Safiul Arif said State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid was scheduled to inaugurate the fair as the chief guest. “But we are shocked at the death Ismat Ara.

We have cancelled the inaugural ceremony. The scheduled programmes of the fair will continue from the second day of the fair,” he said. Like every year, this fair is being held at the initiative of Ministry of Cultural Affairs and District Administration. Almost two thousand stalls have been set up in this fair.

The fair ground and surrounding areas have been decorated nicely on this occasion.
