Macao's composite consumer price index (CPI) for 2020 rose by 0.81 percent year on year to 102.60, with the inflation rate down 1.94 percentage points from 2019 to 0.81 percent, the special administrative region's statistic department said on Friday, Xinhua reports.

The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that the drop was driven by rising charges for eating out and outpatient services, higher rentals for dwellings, as well as higher prices of fresh pork and gold jewelry.

The price indices of health, education and food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 4.02 percent, 3.54 percent and 3.37 percent year on year respectively, whereas the indices of communication and clothing and footwear dropped by 10.61 percent and 6.61 percent respectively.

The Composite CPI for December 2020 dropped by 0.87 percent year on year to 102.05, but grew by 0.21 percent month on month.

The year-on-year decrease in CPI in December 2020 was attributed to lower charges for package tours, telecommunications services and electricity, as well as reduced prices of gasoline, clothing and fresh pork.
