Lyricist Osman Shawkat passes away

Popular lyricist and freedom fighter Osman Shawkat passes away on Monday evening of heart disease at the age of 71 at his residence in the capital’s Banasree area. 

Renowned lyricist Kabir Bakul, also joint secretary of Geetikabi Sangha confirmed the news. ‘I came to know about his death from his family members. He died of heart disease,’ said Kabir Bakul. 

Osman will be buried at Zurain graveyard after his namaz-e-janaza after zuhr prayer on Tuesday. He will also be given state honour. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.

He penned many popular songs, including “Jibananda hoye sangsare ajo ami”, “Ek Phonta Bish Aj”, “Sonamukhi sui diye selai kora kaj”, “Ami chanpa dangar bou” and “Sukher sangake ami jadi jantam”.

Osman Shawkat retired as a joint secretary of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
