At least 30 thousand cattle have been attacked by Lumpy skin disease in Magura. During a visit to 15 villages in the district including Shibrampur, Batikadanga, Alidhani, Narihati and Kadirabad, it was seen that cattle almost in every house were attacked with Lumpy skin disease. Magura district livestock office sources informed that about 30 thousand cattle in the district have already been attacked with lumpy skin disease while the death toll from this disease has stood at 20. The disease of lumpy skin is similar to anthrax .After getting this disease initially different limbs of the cattle including skin get swelled.
Then injury took place in the swelled parts. Finally temperature in cattle body jumps abnormally even to 100 to 106 degree calicoes. When contacted, Romen Shikder of village Shibrampur under Magura sadar upazila said that last week I lost one of my cattle as it was attacked with lumpy skin disease. In last Eid ul Azha market I did not sell the cattle though customers offered me TK 60 thousand.
Alam Shekh of village Batikadanga under Magura sadar upazila said that two of his cattle are now suffering from lumpy skin disease. ‘I am being compelled to spend tk 3 to 4 thousand for treatment of my cattle. But how I shall continue the treatment as I am insolvent, he said. Executive Director of Palli Prokriti Shfiqur Rahman said that the lumpy skin disease has caused damage of Tk about 15 lakhs.
Magura veterinary department official Anwarul Karim admitted the incident of lumpy skin disease. ‘We are working heartily to bring the situation under control . He added consciousness of cattle rearer is a major factor in this regard,’ he said.
