Published : 28 Feb 2024 08:22 PM

Food is one of the basic human needs. But in the case of university students, this matter is nothing. The main struggle of the students studying in the university is the problem of food. Comilla University is not different.

Students have been complaining about the cafeteria food of Comilla University (CoU) for a long time. There are hundred complaints about the quality of food and cleanliness of surroundings. Talking to several students who come to eat in the cafeteria, it is learnt that the cafeteria serves stale and spoiled food. Students have to go to the cafeteria as the high costing of food in hotels outside the university. If the problem cannot be solved, the students also talk about changing the responsibilities of Cafe.

Joy Ghosh, a student of Bangla department, said, "The food environment of the cafe is not good. One plate is used again and again without washing. The food is heated the day before and sold the next day. Many times stale and sour food is served. The administration should monitor this. Change the responsibility if necessary. Give the responsibility to someone new."

It can be seen on the surface, the dishes used while serving the food are not washed and wiped with a cloth. Using the same cloth over and over again while cleaning the dishes. Besides, the drinking water comes directly from the tank without filtering which is not pure. Also, the hand wash basin faucet in the cafeteria is not working properly and one of the washrooms is not usable.

Md Sohail Mia, a student of marketing department, said, "The environment is not good either. They wipe the plate with a rag (cloth) and give them food. Earlier the food was good. Now the food is also not healthy. They gave pulses and vegetables along with the parota. Not good. Food outside is a bit expensive. Forced to eat."

Md. Mahinur Rahman Naeem, a student of Accounting and Information Management department.

, said, "First of all, the cafeteria is not clean. It seems that no one is watching them. If someone had taken real responsibility to supervise, the matter would have been fixed. And according to the price, the food should be better.

Because varsity cafeterias are not run only for profit. If necessary, those who are running it now should be replaced and given the responsibility of running it."

When Mannu Mia, who is in charge of the cafeteria, was asked about cleanliness and food quality, he said, "We clean the plates every night using the cloths used for wiping the plates. Our food is prepared with the students in mind. If they have complaints, we will definitely look into it. We cook in the morning. Cooking is done by 8-9 pm. We are conscious to ensure maximum quality of food. Now if they (students) have any complaint then please suggest me. I'll do it the way it's best to do it. I have no problem with that."

In general, the director of the university's student and guidance office, Professor Dr. Habibur Rahman said, "every effort is being made to improve the quality of food. A cafeteria system will be made on the model of Dhaka University's Faculty of Business Education. There will be various food corners. The preliminary talks have been held with Honorable Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A F M Abdul Moyeen Sir in this regard.”
