Coronavirus pandemic in the country has been constantly affecting people’s lives and livelihoods since the beginning. The recent countrywide lockdown to curb the virus has again hit the marginal income group of our society.
They are always the prime victims of the strict lockdowns. The day labourers, tea-cigarette sellers, and more other people who depend on daily works for their earnings are the ones who are suffering the most. According to a report published in this daily on Tuesday, the government has allocated Tk 230 million in humanitarian assistance for people affected by the pandemic in all 64 districts. The fund will be used to provide food assistance to the people who will call the national helpline, 333, for aid. The aid includes food items like rice, lentils, salt, oil and potatoes.
First of all, government should make sure that the aid reaches those who are truly in need of it. The government, however, needs to do more to reduce the suffering of these people. Under the current scenario, these unfortunate and marginal people, who are struggling to earn money, should immediately be provided with food and cash assistance.
They cannot just sit at home and starve. We want the lockdown to be effective and obeyed by everyone and to do that it is unfair to just depend on the government. The prosperous people of our society should also come forward and provide assistance to them as much as possible.
