London bourse keen to develop Dhaka capital market

The London Stock Exchange, one of the largest capital markets in the world, has shown interest to develop capital market in Bangladesh.

Representatives of the London Stock Exchange made this remarks while attending a bilateral meeting between the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the London Stock Exchange on November 5 this year at London in UK.  The meeting was presided over Md Eunusur Rahman, Chairman of Dhaka Stock Exchange.

The meeting has opened the door to cooperation between the two sides.

The London Stock Exchange is interested in working for the development of the capital market in Bangladesh. Moreover, the representatives of London Stock Exchange Group assured all kinds of cooperation in the development of Dhaka Stock Exchange, a DSE press release said.

The meeting highlighted the future and potential of the capital market in Bangladesh and discussed the development activities of the country's capital market.

Expansion and development of bond market in the country's capital market, especially by raising capital through green bond issue, development of the country's infrastructure, international development through listing of Dhaka Stock Exchange on London Stock Exchange, creation of new fund raising opportunities for listed companies were discussed in detail at the meeting.

While attending the meeting, Prof Dr Shamsuddin Ahmed, Commissioner of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), said, “The present commission is working relentlessly to build equity markets as well as productive markets to increase market depth.”

As part of this, the commission is working on various bonds, ETFs, derivatives products including green bonds and municipal bonds. 

He emphasized the need to focus on promoting these products globally through dual listings and to work together to develop capital markets through training in all fields.

DSE Chairman Md Eunusur Rahman said, “The economic and social development index of Bangladesh is in a very good position. There are more opportunities for the development of the capital market.”

“DSE is determined to take the capital market forward. In this case, the cooperation and experience of the London Stock Exchange Group will be helpful for the Dhaka Stock Exchange,” he added.

DSE Director Md Shakil Rizvi, Managing Director Tariq Amin Bhuiyan, General Manager and Company Secretary Mohammad Asadur Rahman, Deputy General Manager Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan, Assistant General Manager Ruhul Amin and Deputy Manager Md Shahadat Hossain were present at the meeting as the delegation of Dhaka Stock Exchange.

The London Stock Exchange Group was represented by Tom Attenborough, Head of International Business Development at the Primary Market of the Capital Market, Lida Eslami, Head of Business Development at the Exchange Traded Products and International Order Book, Ibukun Adebayo, Director of Africa and South Asian Strategy at the London Stock Exchange Group, and Federica Giacometi, Senior Associate Multi-Asset Primary Market at Business Development.
