It is encouraging to note that Bangladesh will manufacture most powerful and high-speed railway locomotive (engine), coach and spare parts.
About 87 percent of the locomotives and 77 percent coaches of Bangladesh Railway (BR) have become outdated. Hence, railway authorities are importing locomotive engines, coaches and spare parts from different countries to resolve the engine and coach crisis. It needs to be mentioned here that Bangladesh is fully dependent on imported locomotive engine, coach and spare parts.
The West Zone of Bangladesh Railway will be given 40 new locomotive engines aimed at improving the standard of passenger services through infusing dynamism into railway services. And the engines will be procured from the US. Eight of those have already reached the country and the remaining 32 will be brought in four phases.

the performance of our railway sector
When Bangladesh will start manufacturing locomotive engine, coach and spare parts, its dependence on import will end. This will also make the country’s railway sector more competitive and more proactive.
As the government is working to expand rail communication networks across the country, there is no alternative but to go for manufacturing locomotive engine, coach and spare parts.
We think the government always gives priority to the development of the country and therefore it has undertaken a massive rail network expansion job with utmost importance.
Keeping in mind for locomotive and coach demand, the government has concentrated on the development of locomotive engine and coaches by setting up heavy industry.
We highly laud the government’s plan that will help reinforce the functions of the railway sector. However, all the locomotives and coaches will be added to the BR fleet from the domestic industries instantly. Therefore, people can easily move, do business and transport their products. Also, it will be possible to introduce more train service after manufacturing new engines and coaches locally and earn more revenue from the railway sector.
