The ongoing lockdown might be extended for one more week after the vacation of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr or after May 16 as the situation centring the second wave of COVID-pandemic is getting worsened.
State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain on Tuesday said that there are plans to extend the ongoing lockdown in the country by one more week due to the existence of Indian variant of coronavirus.
The State Minister for Public administration made the disclosure while talking to the media on Tuesday afternoon.
He said, “The Indian variant of coronavirus has been found in the country. It can put us at risk. The final decision in this regard will be announced on May 16, the last day of the ongoing lockdown.”
State Minister Farhad Hossain also said that everyone must wear mask.
“We all should keep it in mind that wearing of masks will keep us secured unless it could be dangerous for us”, he advised.
He said, “The government discourages people to leave Dhaka or their present address. In this regard, the period of holidays has been reduced.”
“If people continue going home or to villages, the infection of coronavirus will transmitted to other people.”
In the second phase, the lockdown was announced on April 5 this year due to the high rate of corona infections. The government then declared a 'stricter lockdown' from April 14 as the infection increased further.
It should be mentioned that Bangladesh on Tuesday crossed the grim mark of 12,000 Covid-19 deaths with 33 more fatalities in 24 hours until Tuesday morning. The latest figure pushed up the total number of fatalities to 12,005.
However, the mortality rate rose to 1.55 percent till Tuesday after staying static at 1.54 for four days.
Besides, 1,230 new cases were detected after testing of 14,184 samples, pushing up the total caseload to 776,257. Bangladesh has so far carried out 5,661,926 tests.
The daily infection rate fell slightly to 8.67 from Monday’s 8.99 percent. After a massive upsurge, the number of daily cases fell below 2,000 since May 1.
The country reported its first coronavirus cases on March 8 last year and the first death on the 18th of that month.
