Following the imported sugar price hike, the price of locally produced sugar has been increased by Tk 14 per kg.
The state-owned Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) in a notification signed by its Chief Sales Officer Mazhar Ul Haque Khan confirmed the increase.
It is said that in line with the international and local sugar market price, the price of one kg of locally produced sugar has been increased from Tk 85 to Tk 99. No seller can sell local sugar at more than this price.
The circular also said that the price of sugar produced by BSFIC (Exmil) per tonne was Tk 74,000 earlier. Now the price has been increased to Tk 85000 per tonne.
At the dealer level, the price of sugar per metric ton is Tk 87000. That is, the price will be Tk 87 per kg. Apart from this, the price of per kg packaged sugar at the mill gate has been increased from Tk 75 to Tk 90.
It is also reported that this price will be effective in the market from now.
There has been a shortage of sugar in the market for several days. Sugar is not available in many stores. Even at the dealer level the desired sugar is not met.
In such a situation, the government announced to increase the price of local sugar by Tk 14 per kg.
According to a report by the state-owned marketing agency Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), sugar was sold at Tk 105 to 115 per kg on Thursday, compared to Tk 90 to Tk 92 a month ago.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, the annual demand for sugar in the country is 18 lakh to 20 lakh tonnes. Out of this, 30000 tonnes of sugar is produced in the country's state-owned mills. The remaining sugar has to be imported.
