Shops of locally-made homespun decor artefacts open at Doyel Chattar in front of Dhaka University’s Curzon Hall after four and a half months since the government closed all shops and establishments across the country in March due to coronavirus pandemic.
There are over 20 shops in Doyel Chattar area. Earthen products like pottery, flower vases, small banks, glasses, toys, different types of pots, and wall mats; wooden products like lampshades, plates, toys, photo frames, glasses, and jewellery along with decor items made of jute, cane, plastic and bamboo, carpet, artificial flowers, bags, shikas, dolls, snakes, baskets, sofa, cradle are in plenty.
These beautifully crafted artefacts mainly come from different corners of the country with all earthen products from Barisal regions, bamboo products from Khulna and Rajshahi and jute products from Narshingdi district.
The traditional handworks have often been a symbol of beautification, especially among the elite in Dhaka.
