Livestock sector will be one of the largest sources of export earnings in Bangladesh, said Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim.

“It will be one of the sectors that will strengthen the country's economy. This sector will be one of the biggest sectors to meet the food needs of the people of the country. The government is working to achieve these goals,” he said.

The Minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of 'Livestock Exhibition, 2022' organized by the livestock and dairy development project under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock at the old trade fair ground in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar of the capital on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said, “The government is generously supporting the livestock sector. At a time when the sector was going through a difficult time due to the pandemic, the government approached the high commissions and ports of different countries directly to bring poultry feed, fish feed and animal feed from abroad.”

He mentioned that poultry and dairy industries have been exempted from source tax and unnecessary taxes so that the sector can flourish.

“It is not possible for the government alone to do everything. The government will determine the method, will provide policy-making assistance. We have to work together with the private sector or government-private joint ventures or autonomous organizations. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has opened the horizon for the livestock sector with this in mind,” he added.  The function was attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Department of Livestock and other departments and agencies under the Ministry, livestock scientists-researchers, entrepreneurs, and farmers.
