List of fishermen must be updated: Minister

Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim has ordered to update the list of fishermen.

The Minister gave this order to the officials of the Directorate of Fisheries during the review meeting of the implementation progress of the projects of the fisheries sub-sector included in the annual development program of the Ministry in the conference room of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock at noon on Wednesday at the Secretariat.

At this time, the minister said, the information of fishermen should be updated all the time. This information should be updated every year. Addition and deletion of those included in the list of fishermen should be done as per need. Those who were formerly fishermen but are no longer involved in this profession should be excluded from the list. Genuine fishermen must be included in the list. At the same time they should be brought under registration. Many a times genuine fishermen are not getting government facilities due to lack of proper list. For this reason the registration number should be added to the name of fishermen while providing assistance.

The minister also said that in the critical situation of the economy, the livestock and fisheries sector of the country should be taken forward in such a way that this sector can play a role in eliminating the unemployment caused by Corona, can play a role in creating entrepreneurs, can play a role in the economy, can play a role in earning foreign currency by exporting our products.

 can play a role and thus create employment sector. The ministry is working on how to make those involved with this sector at the grass root level operational. In this regard, the project director and other related officials have to work more sincerely. This sector should contribute more to overcome the shock of the economy due to Corona situation.

At that time, the minister said, according to the report of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, Bangladesh is one of the three countries in the world that were out of danger of a serious disaster in the fisheries sector. This is a very significant achievement. This achievement should be maintained during the crisis.

The minister also added that wastage should be prevented in the implementation of the project. In many cases money is wasted by unnecessary expenses. Be careful about this. Ensure quality of project work.

SM Rezaul Karim also said that there is a demand for Bangladeshi fish in many countries of the world. The Prime Minister has directed to bring fisheries sector experts from different countries of the world to work jointly. In this case, the officials of the Department of Fisheries should come forward and work responsibly. Prime Minister's instructions must be implemented.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Dr. Muhammad Yamin Chowdhury, Additional Secretary Md. Taufiqul Arif and Md Abdul Qayyum, Chairman of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation Kazi Ashraf Uddin, Director General of Directorate of Fisheries Kh Mahbubul Haque, Director General of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute Dr Yahya Mahmud and senior officials of the Ministry and Directorate of Fisheries were present at this time.

Earlier, the minister presided over the review meeting of the implementation progress of the projects of the livestock sub-sector included in the annual development program of the ministry.
