Lightning killed 56 people across the country in the first week of June.

Of the victims, 9 died on 7 June, 25 on 6 June, 7 on 5 June, 9 on 4 June, 5 on 3 June and 1 on 1 June.

Lightning is common across the country between the months of February to November. However, during nor’easters, lightning increases. Lightning has been seen striking different parts of the country this month quite regularly leading to numerous casualties and deaths.

In this regard, meteorologist Abul Kalam told Bangladesh Post that more lightning occurs compared to what is seen. In these situations, a little awareness could save many lives.

“Lightning is intense during this season. It is advisable to remain indoors during the storms. People should avoid standing under trees or in open fields during this time”, he said.

Meteorologist Majidul Islam told the media that from February to November, whenever heavy clouds are formed, there can be thunderstorms. As long as the nor’easter is active, continuous lightning is likely.

He further said that there is no thunderstorm in winter because then clouds are not formed, but when the monsoon winds arrive in June, the lightning decreases even if there is rain. However, in this season, the clouds that are required for thunderstorms form easily and lightning can strike at any time.

Another expert from the meteorological department shared that we don’t see most of the lightning that occurs. We see big thunderstorms or the ones closer to our area. There are usually countless lightning strikes in this weather.

Meteorologists believe that the amount of lightning in the country has increased due to climate change. However, awareness and remaining cautious could reduce the number of deaths caused by lightning.
