Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) could be a role model among government agencies in the country, said Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam.
He made the comment while speaking as the chief guest at a review meeting on developmental activities of the local government engineering department at LGED building in Agargaon on Sunday.
The minister said that besides the development of rural infrastructure, LGED is also playing a role in the development of physical infrastructure in urban and suburban areas. In addition to the activities of its own department, it has been implementing projects of several ministries and departments with utmost efficiency. The development work undertaken at present is many times more than under other governments. This organization is undeniable in the development of the country's infrastructure.
He said all the projects have to be completed within the stipulated time. Project time cannot be extended with excuses. There will be no compromise on transparency and accountability. Inferior people give birth to inferior offspring and, thus, propagate their inferiority. Those involved in substandard work and irregularities will not be exempted. Md Tajul Islam instructed the project managers to make regular site visits and check the quality of work. He also directed the officials at all levels to regularly monitor the activities at the field level.
There is no alternative to sustainable development. Mentioning that the quality of construction materials should be kept intact for this, the minister said that a letter has already been sent to every deputy commissioner to ensure the quality of bricks. If a brick kiln owner does not produce quality bricks, their license will be revoked.
The minister said the structural design of Grameen, Union Parishad and Upazila roads and bridges has been finalized. Infrastructural work has to be done by planning for the future keeping in view the quantity and type of vehicles that will be moving on the road.
Md Tajul Islam said, considering the economic aspect of the country, new projects have to be taken according to the importance. He drew the attention of all project managers to ensure that projects which are less required are not taken up on an urgent basis. Instructing the chief engineer to take steps to evaluate the performance of the officers, he said that not only punishment should be given but those who do good work should be rewarded. Otherwise you will not be interested in good deeds. Training institutes have been set up to create skilled manpower. The local government minister also said that there is no alternative to skilled manpower to run the organization smoothly.
During this time a presentation was given on the development activities of LGED. In the presentation, the Chief Engineer informed the Minister about the activities of different units of LGED.
