Eminent actor, Television personality, Ekushey Padak winner, ATM Shamsuzzaman, passed away on Saturday morning. He was 80.
The veteran actor breathed his last at his own residence at city’s Sutrapur area at around 8am. He was suffering from old-age complications for a long time, family sources said.
He is survived by his wife, three daughters, two sons and a host of friends and well-wishers to mourn his death.
Earlier, on February 17, he was hospitalised with respiratory problems. He returned home from the hospital on Friday.
His namaz-e-janaza was held after the Zuhr prayers. He was laid to rest next to his son Kamruzzaman Kabir at the Jurain graveyard, his daughter Koyel Ahmed confirmed the matter to the Bangladesh Post.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed condolences over his death.
In a condolence message, the President said, “The death of ATM Shamsuzzaman is an irreparable loss to the cultural arena of the country.”
He said, “People will remember his contribution to flourishing the non-communal spirit in Bangladesh with due respect.”
In a condolence message, Sheikh Hasina said the popular actor will remain alive in the hearts of the people through his extraordinary performance.
The Prime Minister prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of veteran actor ATM Shamsuzzaman.
Besides, Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad M Fazley Rabbi Miah and Chief Whip Nur-E Alam Chowdhury Liton also expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of ATM Shamsuzzaman.
Moreover, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud and other senior ministers and lawmakers expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of veteran actor.
The legendary actor, director and screen-playwright won six National Film Awards for Best Actor in Kazi Hayat's 'Dayee Ke?' (1987), Best Comedy Actor in 'Madam Fuli' (1999), 'Churiwala' (2001), 'Mon Boshe Na Porar Table A' (2009), Best Supporting Actor in 'Chorabali' (2012) and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
He made his television debut in 1965. He captured the attention of audiences by acting in a negative role in Amzad Hossain’s film ‘Noyonmoni’, in 1976.
Born on 10 September, 1941 in Noakhali’s Daulatpur, ATM Shamsuzzaman made his debut in the media as an assistant director in 1961, with Udayan Choudhuy’s film ‘Bishkonya’.
