Lawyers demand withdrawal of int’l dignitaries’ letter to PM

The Supreme Court Bar Association sought withdrawal of the open letter issued by international Nobel Laureates, politicians, businessmen and members of elite society requesting Prime Minister of Bangladesh to suspend the ongoing case against Dr Muhammad Yunus. 

The statement states that it is an undue interference in the internal affairs of Bangladesh and undue interference upon independent and impartial judiciary and detrimental to the just and lawful right of the poor labours. This is also against international law. They said it is unexpected and unwarranted.

 The president of SCBA senior advocate Momtazuddin Fakir and the secretary of SCBA Md. Abdun Nur Dulal said the open letter requesting Hon'ble Prime Minister to stay the ongoing legal proceedings pending in the Labour Court against Dr Muhammad Yunus is based upon incorrect information. “They would not write such a letter if they could know the truth,” it reads. 

 Some respectable persons including Nobel laureates, politicians, businessmen and members of elite society wrote an open letter to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh recently. According to SCBA statement, this letter is an undue interference in the internal affairs of Bangladesh and is an interference in the independent judicial administration. 

 They said it is also a mischievous stand against the legal and legitimate right and interest of the poor laborers and it is unexpected and unwarranted to the world leaders.

 SCBA said the ongoing judicial process against Dr  Muhammad Yunus is the demand of law and natural justice. SCBA believes that, those judicial process are ongoing for due cause and absolutely in accordance with law and on strict compliance of legal formalities. 

 “If Dr Muhanunad Yunus feels aggrieved at any stage of legal process, he has proper remedy and redress in the law itself. Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh filed no cases against Dr Muhammad  Yunus on labour issues, rather those cases were filed by the oppressed labors for materializing their legal, lawful and genuine claim and rights,” it states.

 The statement further stated that judiciary of Bangladesh is independent and impartial. The Hon’ble judges have been discharging their duties independently, impartially and within the domain of law. The executives have no scope or authority to interfere in the functions of the judiciary. 

 “The Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh is an instrument with the embodiment and recognition or all fundamental and natural rights of human. As per this Constitution, nobody is above law, and it is inalienable right of every citizen to get protection of law and get shelter of the law. The labours, as citizens of the country, have the right to take protection of law. Dr Muhammad Yunus is also not above law,” it reiterates.
