Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all is the SDG 4 on the list of sustainable development goals (SDGs). With Bangladesh striving to achieve the SDGs to become a digital Bangladesh the uniformity that is needed to be brought in the education sector has become more imperative than ever. With that University Grants Commission wanted to start uniform admission system where all public universities would hold their entrance exams at the same time. However, five major universities – University of Dhaka, University of Chittagong, Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology have refused to join the process of uniform admission.

This will ensure the government to strengthen

and empower the independent and the

constitutional institution to establish a better

developed education system for the tertiary level

UGC authorities have so far decided to hold the admission test in cluster system despite the official refusal of the five universities. The reason that the big five have given is that they are unable to take part in the cluster process because of ‘internal problems’. The conscious people of the country cannot help but imagine what are these ‘internal problems’ that the public universities’ authorities are talking about. Being an institution being run by the public’s money the authorities of these universities are liable to answer to the public about their reason of not participating in the cluster admission system.

Before this the scene was such that any student can purchase as many forms as he/she likes and sit for any number of public university entrance exams which was often costly and also sometimes created problems for the disadvantaged students aspiring higher education. However, the cluster system introduced by UGC is a laudable initiative. This will ensure the government to strengthen and empower the independent and the constitutional institution to establish a better developed education system for the tertiary level.
