Late-Autumn downpour swamps city

A heavy, late-autumnal downpour Tuesday, swamped the capital Dhaka, triggering water-logging in many areas and causing immense sufferings to city dwellers. The rains also crippled life in Dhaka as most of the roads in different parts of the capital went under ankle to knee-deep water. Roads in a number of areas, including Dhanmondi Old-27, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, Rampura, Shantinagar, Green Road and many areas of Mirpur, went under knee to waist deep water.

The worst-affected areas include Mohammadpur, Karwan Bazar, Sobhanbagh, Panthapath, Green Road, Fakirapool, Khilgaon, Mauchak, Malibagh, Moghbazar, Paltan, Kazipara, Sukrabad and Shantinagar. Besides, roads and lanes and by lanes of Rajarbagh, Motijheel, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, Tejturibazar, Monipuri para, Kazipara, Begum Rokeya Sarani and many low-lying areas were also inundated from the rain.

Many people were seen walking along the roads for lack of vehicles. The Met office recorded 45.2 millimeters of rainfall till filing of this report on Tuesday afternoon. The rain that began on Tuesday morning continued till 2.30pm. Many commuters were seen facing shortage of public transports to reach their destinations. The torrential rains also caused severe waterlogging in many parts of the busy, populous city. Vehicles were seen stranded for hours in unprecedented traffic jams.

Hundreds of commuters faced manifold troubles in reaching their destinations due to water-logging and lack of transportation for the incessant rain. Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) in its bulletin forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind over the country for today (Wednesday).

“Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Dhaka, Mymensingh Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, at many places over Khulna and Barishal divisions and a few places over Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions during the time,” a met office bulletin said.

Moreover, some places in Barishal, Chattogram, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions may see moderately heavy to very heavy falls until today (Wednesday), it added. The highest rainfall in the country for the last 24-hours till 6am on Tuesday was recorded at 90millimeters in Dinajpur followed by 72 millimeters in Kutubdia.
