A sexagenarian person was killed and another injured in a landslide due to heavy rain in Moheshkhali Upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Abdus Shukkur, 60. The injured is his daughter Mostofa Khanom, 20.
The incident occurred in Jhapua area under Kalarmarchhara union in the Upazila at 10:00am on Monday.
Officer-in-Charge of Moheshkhali Police Station, Sukanta Chakraborty, confirmed the matter. He said, a landslide occurred during the heavy rain and a chunk of soil from the hill fell inside the house. The portion of soil fell on father and daughter, Abdus Shukkur dead on the spot and Mostofa Khanom injured.
Earlier on Sunday, three members of the same family were killed due to a landslide in Segunbagicha area under Shilkhali union in Pekua Upazila. With this, a total of 21 people died due to landslide in Cox’s Bazar since July 1 this year.
Meanwhile, heavy rain continued in Cox’s Bazar for the last three days due to low pressure in the Bay. Adverse weather was also observed in the coastal areas. Hundreds of thousands people in various Upazilas of Cox’s Bazar, including the district town, are at risk of landslide.
The local administration was conducting campaign to instruct the people living riskily at the foothills to evacuate to safe shelters. Sources from the Rohingya camp said more than 50 incidents of landslide occurred in Ukhiya and Teknaf Rohingya camps since Saturday.
Electricity poles have collapsed on Cox's Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive road due to heavy rain and gusty wind since Monday morning. Movements of vehicles were disrupted for several hours for that. Later, movements of vehicles became normal with the help of the army.
Executive Engineer of Cox’s Bazar Power Development Board, Md Abdul Kader Goni, said electricity connections of 20 electric poles were disrupted due to gusty wind. The electric workers are working to restore the power connection.
Meanwhile, adverse weather was seen in the coastal areas due to the low pressure for the last three days. The fishing boats were asked to go to the shelters in coastal areas from the deep sea.
Assistant Meteorologist of Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Department, Abdul Hannan, said they instructed to hoist cautionary signal no. 3 in Cox’s Bazar sea port. 155 mm of rain was recorded in 24 hours since Monday 12:00pm, he added.
