Encircled by tall trees, beneath the endless blue sky, lies the vast and picturesque campus of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet. At the heart of this campus glistens Rudra Sen Lake — a serene heaven where nature and beauty coexist in perfect harmony. Floating gracefully across the water’s surface are red water lilies, nature’s timeless symbol of peace and purity.
The softness of the lilies touches the soul, while their simple elegance reflects the silent poetry of rural Bangladesh. The lake, named in memory of Rudra Sen — a SUST student who was martyred during the 2024 mass uprising in Sylhet — has now become a centre of beauty, calm, and inspiration for students and visitors alike.
The charm of the red lilies is complemented by the gentle chorus of birds that fill the air. With its rolling green hills, winding paths, small tea stalls, and the scenic Kilo Road, the campus has turned into a slice of paradise — a sanctuary where students find solace amidst the pressures of university life.
Located beside the central roundabout, Rudra Sen Lake is more than just a scenic attraction; it has grown into the living heart of the university. Every morning, as the first rays of the sun break over the horizon, the red lilies begin to bloom. When the soft breeze ripples across the lake, the flowers sway gently with the waves, creating a picture so poetic that it feels almost surreal. Students often say that this beauty alone is enough to wash away the stress of studies and the noise of city life.
Ummey Sadiya Tabassum, a student of the Department of Social Work, shared, “Whenever I come to the lake between classes, my heart feels refreshed. The red lilies are breathtakingly beautiful. I love sitting here, taking photos, and watching the view — it feels like a fairytale kingdom. I really hope the university authorities will take regular initiatives to preserve this natural beauty.”
Al-Amin, a student from the Department of Political Studies, echoed the same sentiment,
“Rudra Sen Lake is truly the heart of our university. The red lilies have made it even more enchanting. The stillness of dawn, the touch of the cool morning breeze, and the vivid beauty of the lilies together turn the lake into a living poem. When they bloom in the early light, the sight is beyond words. This place could easily attract visitors from beyond the campus.”
Professor Abul Hasnat, head of the university’s Estate Maintenance Department, emphasised the ecological importance of the flowers, he said, “The water lily is not only a symbol of beauty, it also plays a key role in maintaining environmental balance. As it is our national flower, we are planting different varieties of lilies in Rudra Sen Lake. These blooms refresh students’ minds and help preserve biodiversity. The lilies cool the water, provide shelter for aquatic life, and keep the ecosystem stable. We must all take responsibility for maintaining the lake and protecting its natural balance.”
