Kuwait on Thursday clarified the citizenship status of Bangladeshi MP Mohammad Shahid Islam Papul alias Kazi Papul who was detained on charges of human trafficking, money laundering and bribing officials.

The interior ministry in a tweet said he is not a Kuwaiti citizen.
The ministry confirmed in a press statement that what was circulated about the accused obtaining Kuwaiti citizenship is incorrect calling on all media and social media to be accurate in what they publish, Arab Times reports.

The Ministry also stated that the doors are open round the clock to respond to any queries related to security.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anas Al-Saleh said, “It is an important issue that has manifestations of corruption and is now under the authority of the public prosecutor.”

Earlier the question was raised in Parliament by BNP MP Harunur Rashid where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had replied the Laxmipur-2 constituency will be announced vacant, if Kazi Papul is found to have citizenship of Kuwait.

The foreign ministry in a statement on Thursday clarified that Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen did not mention Kazi Papul as a citizen of Kuwait in any interview as reported by some media.

The minister had earlier said, “Mohammad Shahid Islam did not go to Kuwait with any diplomatic passport of the Bangladesh government and he has been engaged in business in Kuwait for about 29/30 years. He may have a resident permit in Kuwait.”
