Kurigram DC takes steps to make municipal area free from waterlogging

As per the directives of the Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram, Nusrat Sultana, steps have been taken to make 27.2 square-kilometre Kurigram Municipal area free from water-logging. 

According to sources, after the establishment of Kurigram Municipality in 1972, so far 50 kiolmetres of drains have been constructed inside the municipal areas. Due to non-repair and non-renovation of those drains for a long time, most of those drains have been filled up. Moreover, those drains were not cleaned regularly. Many infrastructures were also build over those drains. As a result, most of the areas of the town including the Officepara were water-logged after a moderate down pour. As a result, sufferings of the residents of the town knew no bounds.

It is learnt, watching the condition of the water-logged town areas, Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram took an initiative to clean and renovate the drains and to make new drains at a cost of Taka 24.5 million (Taka two crore 45 lakhs). With the fund 7.78 kilomtres of new drains would be constructed and 5.50 kilometres of old drains would be repaired.  After the completion of the works, there would be no water-logging near the office of the Deputy Commissioner and the surrounding areas. 

A source informed, Taka 20 crore fund is likely to be allocated for the construction of necessary drains and to repair the old drains. 

Mahmudun Nabi, Assistant Engineer of Kurigram Municipality informed, the works for three drains would be done and other drains would also be repaired in phases. 

Atikur Rahman, Executive Engineer of Kurigram Municipality informed, the drainage problems of Kurigram Municipality were identified and those would be solved soon. 

Chief Executive Officer of Kurigram Municipality Hossain Mohmmmad Hye Jockey said the illegal infrastuctures of the drains were the huge challenges for them. The  owners of those illegal infrastructures have been asked to remove those. It that did not work, the Municipality would take necessary step to demolish those. 

Asduzzaman, Administrator of Kurigram Municipality informed already a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner was held where the problems of the drainage system of the town were discussed. Under the directives of the Deputy Commissioner, the work was progressing fast and it is hoped there would be no problem of water-logging in the town after the completion of the work.  

Nusrat Sultana, Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram said, the Muncipality would supervise the construction and the renovation work of the drains. 'After my taking charge as the DC, I noticed that a large areas including the DC office areas inundated after the rainfall'. She added, 'The drainage problem was age-old and I discussed with the concerned officials including the Administrator of the Municipality and due to my initiatives, the required fund was allocated. 

The drainage problem would be resolved soon after the work of the construction of the new drains and repairs of the old ones would start,' she said.
