Kurigram Agricultural University Bill- 2021 was placed in the National Parliament on Monday, with a vision to enrich the agriculture of the northern parts of the country through education and research.
The bill, placed by Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni, was later sent to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Education for further scrutiny and submit a report within a month.
Earlier, a virtual cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on March 9 approved the Kurigram Agricultural University draft law, 2021.
According to the draft, the university will take necessary steps for teaching, research and training at various undergraduate and postgraduate levels in agricultural sciences.
In addition to educational activities, it will exhibit sustainable agricultural technology and high yielding agricultural products.
The bill stipulates that the Chancellor of the University will appoint an agronomist or an eminent professor, involved in agricultural education and research, as the Vice-Chancellor (VC) for a term of four years as directed by the President. Moreover, no one can be appointed as VC for more than two terms.
