KUET expels 9 students over teacher’s death

Nine students, including BCL general secretary Sadman Nahyan Sejan, have been suspended in connection with the death of a teacher at the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET).

They were suspended for violating student discipline and code of conduct. Meanwhile, a new five-member inquiry committee will work on the matter according to the university's vice-chancellor.

The KUET authorities stated in a press release that the issue of the untimely death of Dr Selim Hossain, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in KUET, was raised at a syndicate meeting on December 2 and 3. 

The syndicate has decided to temporarily expel 9 students from the university for misconduct as the initial truth of the matter was revealed after reviewing the footage and other information of the closed circuit camera.

Sadman Nahyan Sejan of Computer Science and Engineering Department, Mohammad Tahamidul Haque Ishraq of Civil Engineering Department, Mohammad Sadman Shakib and ASM Ragib Ahsan Munna of Leather Engineering Department, Mahmudul Hasan of Civil Engineering Department, Md Riaz Khan Niloy and Faisal Ahmed Rifat and Mohammad Naimur Rahman of Materials Science and Engineering Department are the students who were suspended. All the students suspended are involved in politics and are members of Chhatra League.

Meanwhile, the KUET authorities formed a new five-member committee on Friday night to investigate the death of the teacher. In the new committee, Prof Dr Mohiuddin Ahmed of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has been made the President and Prof Alhaj Uddin of the Department of Mathematics has been made the Member Secretary. Besides, Prof Khandaker Mahbub of KUET, a representative of Khulna Deputy Commissioner and a representative of Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner were also made members. The inquiry committee has been asked to submit an investigation report within 10 days.

KUET Vice-Chancellor Prof Kazi Sajjad Hossain said a letter was sent to the deputy commissioner and police commissioner on Saturday.
