Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) has been declared closed till December 13 due to an intense situation there encircling the death of its teacher Prof Dr Mohammad Selim Hossain.
As per the order of the KUET authorities, residential students of the university left their dormitories by 4pm on Friday. The decision was taken after a KUET syndicate meeting at around 10 am Friday. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Kazi Sajjad Hossain said this while briefing media following the meeting.
He said that no decision was taken at the meeting to form a new committee for inquiry into the death of Professor Selim. Meanwhile, additional police have been deployed on campus. Bangladesh Chhatra League has given a memorandum with 5 demands to the vice-chancellor which includes not to stop politics of students at the university.
After the death of Professor Selim Hossain on Tuesday afternoon, it was alleged that he had suffered a heart attack and died following his being assaulted and humiliated by Kuwait BCL leaders and activists in morning on the same day. The university became heated due to the unusual death of the teacher.
Professor Selim Hossain was a professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in KUET and was the provost of Lalon Shah Hall.
On the other hand, the KUET Teachers' Association has announced that it will not take part in academic activities until the incident is properly investigated and judged. No teacher will take part in academic activities until the students responsible for Dr. Selim Hossain's demise have been expelled and punished.
Meanwhile, the BCL has alleged that an attempt is being made to divert the death of KUET teacher Mohammad Selim Hossain to a different direction.
The university branch Chhatra League made the allegation at a press conference at Khulna Press Club on Friday afternoon.
Sadman Nahian, general secretary of KUET Chhatra League, read out a written statement at the press conference.
He said, "All the students are deeply saddened by the premature death of Professor Selim Hossain of the Department of Electrical and Electronics of the University.”
He alleged that dirty politics is being played in the university over the death of Prof Mohammad Selim Hossain. The image of the general student and Chhatra League is being tarnished due to such politically motivated practices, he further said.
