British number one Johanna Konta earned her first victory in the French Open main draw with a straight-set win over Germany's Antonia Lottner, BBC reports.
Konta, seeded 26th, won 6-4, 6-4 against the world number 147.
Both players settled down in the second, Konta earning the only break in what proved to be the match-winning game.
Konta took her first match point when Lottner could not return a thumping backhand, setting up a second-round match against American wildcard Lauren Davis.
A first-serve percentage down at 62% was hampered further by only winning 56% of these points, although it proved to matter little because of equally erratic serving from the other end.
Apart from Konta being unable to convert two break points for a 3-1 lead, chances were rarely offered as both players regained composure in their service games.
Out of nowhere, Lottner rustled up a pair of break points for a 5-4 lead, only for former world number four Konta to save them with a big first serve followed by a backhand winner.
Lottner saw another chance disappear with an unforced error and that proved vital as Konta - backed by a typically strong British support in Paris - held before breaking for victory in the next game.
But when the chips were down, and Konta was facing two break points at 4-4 all in the second set, her resolve strengthened - and she was soon back in the locker room.
Meanwhile, Former Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki lost in the French Open first round to Russian world number 68 Veronika Kudermetova.
The Danish 13th seed lost 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Philippe Chatrier despite winning the opening seven games in a row.
Wozniacki won 62% of the total points in the opening set but crumbled in the second and was broken three times.
She fell 3-0 down in the decider as she lost a first-round match in Paris for only the third time since 2007.
On thye other hand, Petra Kvitova withdrew from the French Open before her first round match on Monday due to an injury to her forearm but the Czech is hopeful she will be able to compete at Wimbledon.
“I’m so disappointed to have to announce my withdrawal from Roland Garros,” the sixth seed said on Twitter before her match against Romania’s Sorana Cirstea.
“I’ve had pain in my left forearm for a few weeks and last night an MRI confirmed a grade two tear which could unfortunately could get a lot worse if I play today,” added the left hander.
“They said for now two to three weeks off, which means no tennis, of course, because it’s my left forearm. I’m gonna do some fitness and everything what I can do and to kind of prepare my body for the tennis on the grass then.
The Czech player has been replaced in the draw by lucky loser Kaja Juvan of Slovenia.
