Kite making gains ground in Chatmohar

Kite flying has become a major recreational sport in Chatmohar upazila of Pabna.  Artisans along with locals are eyeing on kite production not only to meet local demands, but also to export in other districts as well. As the end of spring season serves the best weather for kite flying, artisans in the area spend busy time making kites and other accessories.

Many of the artisans specially focus on kite making during springtime in the area. Due to lockdown, outdoor sports and other recreational event could not be arranged for a long period of time. During lockdown, kite flying gained a lot of popularity. People in the area took the chance to grow the business of kite production in the meantime.

Mohaiminul Halim, an occasional kite flyer from Baluchar mahalla in the upazila said that most of the people in Chatmohor upazila spend a monotones time due to Covid-19 and lockdown. As Kite flying is an individual sport and does not need any gathering, people are leaning towards this to brush off their boredom.

Kite collector Jamiul Islam Kabli said that he have more than 20 variants of kites as Huge, Octopus, Rocket, Plane, Catterpiller and so on. He makes most of his exotic kites. He hopes to fly all this after lockdown is over.

“I loved kite flying since my childhood. I was the first in my area to start the trend of attaching lights in kite to get a majestic view in the night sky. Many people then really liked the concept,” he added.

Decorator businessperson Moktar Hossain said that he in his idle moments make large sized kites. These kites are sold from Tk 300 to Tk 2000.  This is an alternative way of earning, he mentioned.

Hasnat Ferdous, a Standard 5 student from the area said that people now a days fly kites with light attached to them at night. This new variants of kites really shines the night sky. Many people this year have started to fly light attached kites.
