Kitchen market syndicate has taken away about Tk 1,000 crore in 40 days by selling varieties of chicken and eggs at a high price by defying the government order.

Instead of paying any heed to the directive, the syndicate continues to sell the items at a high rate, much to the sufferings of the people.

A dozen of egg is being sold at Tk 150 to Tk 160 while consumers have to pay at least Tk 30 to Tk 50 more while buying broiler and sonali chickens.

Market insiders say although the syndicate is active in kitchen market, the authorities concerned do not trace the existence of the syndicate.

The government on September 15 fixed the prices of egg and chicken at producer, wholesale and retail levels to control the market.

As per the directive, the price of each egg is Tk 10.58 at the producer level, Tk 11.01 at the wholesale level and Tk 11.87 at the retail level while broiler chicken price at producer level is Tk 168.91, wholesale level at Tk 172.61 and consumer level is Tk 179.59.

The price of Sonali chicken price is Tk 260.78 at producer level, wholesale at Tk 264.57 and consumer level is Tk 269.64.

Egg market insiders say that the country has a demand of five crore eggs every day. According to insiders, the syndicate is taking away about Tk 7 (seven) crore every day from egg market.

Traders who sell varieties of chickens say that the country has a demand of 3,500 tonnes of chicken.

Market insiders say that if Tk 50 more is cost for per kilogram chicken, what the figure stands.

Executive magistrate Omar Faruque, who is conducting drives in the capital on a regular basis, told the Bangladesh Post that this syndicate deals with the kitchen markets at the dead of night.

“The group handles their businesses without any documents. That’s why, we are not able to nab them on a specific ground,” he said.

“Yet, we have been working on it. Hopefully, we will be able to dismantle the syndicate,” he added.
