After a 20-year of suspension, the movement of ferry services resumes experimentally on Kazirhat (Nagarbari)-Aricha riverine route from Wednesday noon.

According to sources one ferry from Kazirhat departed for Arichaghat while another from Aricharghat departed for Kazirhat and reached their destinations without any hassle.

Commodore Golam Sadeque, Chairman of BIWTA watched the experimental movement of the

ferries on Kazirhat-Aricha riverine route.

Officials from BIWTC, BIWTA, local public representatives and political leaders, among others, were present during the experimental resumption of ferry movement through Kazirhat-Aricha route.

Commodore Golam Sadeque said, works of repairing of ferry ghats have been completed and the riverine route has been made ready to operate the ferries.

Now, ferries are being operated experimentally.

The full-fledged ferry movement will be inaugurated through the route soon. Operation of the ferries through the route will ease the communication with Dhaka with the northern districts of the country.

However, the navigability crisis and 20 to 25 hidden-chars in the river Jamuna were posing a threat to the smooth movement of ferries through the route, informed concerned sources.

It is learnt, thousands of people of 16 northern districts including Pabna, Natore, Rajshahi, Bogura and Chapainwabganj districts cross Jamuna river on speed boats and shallow-engine driven boats from Kazihat to Aricha daily to reach Dhaka and vice-versa.

Due to a short distance and a short time to reach destinations through the route, the Kazihat-Aricha riverine route is likely to become a popular route in near future.  It is learnt, only within 3 to 4 hours, a passenger will be able to reach Dhaka from the Aricha ghat.
